Green Friday: Why we're donating 5% of our sales this Friday

The largest retail festival is happening this Friday 29th marking the unofficial beginning of Christmas shopping - It’s Black Friday! Each year we see brands competing to give the biggest discounts and each year the discounts start earlier and earlier. We, as a conscious brand, have thought long and hard about this choice and have decided that it no longer feels right to be a part of this shopping festival which encourages mass consumption. Read on to find out why...

Black Friday originated from the US as Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday in November, the following Friday was often considered as an unofficial holiday. The trend was then brought over to the UK with brands offering the biggest deals and has been gaining momentum ever since…

We’re Making Friday Green again!

Pursuit got involved with the hype last year and although Black Friday is good for profits, the shopping festival isn’t so good for the planet. Here’s why:

We are all guilty of getting caught up in the amazing deals and price drops which makes us feel like we HAVE to buy something, we buy because of temptation, not because we actually need something. This relationship with consumption has become unhealthy and is contributing to the amount of waste that is left in landfill. Companies increase production to get ready for the occasion which uses a huge amount of the planet’s resources in a short time. Don’t get us wrong, we love a bit of retail therapy, our decision for no longer taking part in Black Friday isn’t about blame, it’s a decision to become more aware of how we as customers are shopping and what we want our brand to stand for and fast fashion is never something that we can stand behind.

Pursuit Introduces: The Green Friday Initiative

This Friday 29th November to Monday 2nd Dec, we are super excited to Launch our Green Friday Initiative!

- Green Discounts

For those wondering if we’re offering any discount at all, the answer is yes…over the course of 4 days, we will be applying modest discounts on our bestselling suits so for those who have missed out, now’s your chance to invest in a statement swimsuit that will last you the test of time. All of our reversible bikinis will go on sale and stay on sale. In case you didn’t know - not only are all of our bikinis made from recycled waste, they are all reversible so you can create 4 different looks! They are also mix & match to choose the style that makes you feel most confident.

- Green Deliveries

Black Friday in the UK is a big online event and “sees up to 82,000 diesel vans and trucks on the roads and at peak times, a diesel truck will leave an Amazon fulfilment centre every 93 seconds!” Ecotricity, Nov 2018. With this in mind, we are super excited to have partnered with Eco Mailing, a green delivery company who will be delivering all of our London orders, where emissions are the highest, using only 100% electric vans. These vans release 0 emissions into the environment!

- The Green Friday Fund

Our biggest surprise of all, we are delighted to announce that we will be donating 5% of all sales made from Friday 29th to Monday 2nd December to Ocean Unite. Ocean Unite was founded in 2015 to unify impactful voices at key moments to drive positive ocean conservation. Ocean Unite's mission is a particularly powerful vow to highly protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030. At Pursuit, we feel strongly to stand behind this organisation and are excited to be able to contribute towards cleaning up our oceans. “Our goal is to place the ocean at the forefront of political consciousness; to deepen the recognition that the health of our ocean must be recognised as one of the 21st century’s prevailing challenges and opportunities; and that it requires immediate attention.” Ocean Unite.

With a little thought and action, we can make a difference to the real problem – rising consumption – which adds to climate change, loss of habitat and plastic waste.

Let’s spread Green Friday awareness by making the choice to shop responsibly, because at the end of the day, the things we buy don’t just have a product cost, they have an environmental cost.

Love Annabel & Hannah
